Spirit Of Rhanee by Nicky

Rhanee (who is a female Indian elephant) was taken from Thailand as an infant and for years toured with travelling circuses. Chained for days on end and barely able to move. At Mary Chipperfield Promotions she was beaten with shovels and metal bars. Her keeper was jailed, but Rhanee didn't go free. Today, she lives in a Spanish zoo (Valwo) spending her days performing disturbed and repetitive behaviours. Animal Defenders (www.animaldefenders.org.uk) want to place Rhanee in a Californian elephant sanctuary with acres of space, natural vegetation, and specialist knowledge in the care of abused elephants.

Nivky writes "Although I have great plans for this piece (I am working on some Hindi lyrics, and arranging it appropriately for Indian instruments), I deliberately composed this originally for the piano and using as many white keys as possible. This is to try to highlight the awful abuse of elephants hunted for their ivory, which of course was used to make the white keys on the piano. I have also aimed to use as large a range as possible since elephants are the giants of the animal kingdom! And hopefully you will also notice that there are either very quiet sections and very loud sections. Have you heard an elephant roar? Its amazing, but they are also extremely gentle giants and very docile (probably because they're vegetarian!!!!!!)."

"So, hope you enjoy this little piece. It's not depressing, I have deliberately made it quite lively but also meditative! I hope this song has tried to capture (now there's a most apt word!) Rhanee's fighting spirit."
